FIRING
AT L'ATELIER
AT L'ATELIER
We offer firing services for both members and guests. We fire in electric kilns at Cone 6 temperature. Firing fees are based on the volume of your pieces, measured in cubic inch, and differ depending on your membership status.
For Non-Members
The fee is $0.08 per cubic foot for both bisque and glaze firings (one single fee).
For Members
The fee is discounted to $0.06 per cubic foot for both bisque and glaze firings (one single fee).
Both bisque and glaze firings are charged based on the cubic inches of the work you are having fired. You can calculate the volume of your pieces by measuring their dimensions or inquire with our staff for assistance in estimating the size.
Example : if your piece measures 4 inches in length, 3 inches in width, and 5 inches in height, you would calculate the volume as follows: 4 × 3 × 5 = 60 cubic inches, and then multiply that number by the firing fee.
Non-members' rate ($0.08 per cubic inch): 60 cubic inches × $0.08 = $4.80.
Members' rate ($0.06 per cubic inch): 60 cubic inches × $0.06 = $3.60.
Additional Notes:
There is a 2.5″ minimum in any direction, even for pieces smaller than this measurement.
Measurements should be made on 1/2″ increments.
Each piece will be calculated individually and cannot be grouped with other pieces, even if they are small. This policy reflects the need to allocate adequate spacing for all items in the kiln to ensure proper firing and prevent damage to other pieces.
Glaze Requirements
To ensure the best results, please make sure your glazes are formulated for Cone 6 firing. If you don’t have your own Cone 6 glazes or want to try something new, we also offer a selection of studio glazes for purchase. Feel free to ask about our available colors and finishes when you're ready to glaze your pieces.
Firing Turnaround Time
Our typical firing schedule is as follows:
Bisque Firing: Approximately 1-2 weeks, depending on the studio's firing schedule and the size of your batch.
Glaze Firing: 1-2 weeks after the bisque firing, depending on the studio's firing schedule and the size of your batch.
While we do our best to meet specific deadlines, please plan ahead as kiln schedules change constantly.
Drop-Off and Pick-Up
Drop-Off: Please make sure your pieces are clean and free of any excess glaze or debris. Items should be properly labeled and signed for identification.
Pick-Up: Participants are expected to pick up their pieces within one month after firing. Please note that we do not notify when pieces are ready for pickup. We appreciate if you can retrieve your work promptly, as we have limited storage space and can only hold pieces for a limited time.
Special Instructions
Large or Delicate Pieces: For over-sized or especially delicate work, please inquire in advance. Special handling may be required, and additional charges may apply.
Glazing: All glazes must be approved in advance.
Storage and Breakage Policy
Storage: Please pick up your fired pieces promptly after firing. Pieces left in the studio for more than 30 days may be subject to storage fees or may be discarded.
Breakage: While we take great care in handling your work, pottery is inherently fragile. We are not responsible for any breakage or damage that occurs during the firing process, but we will do our best to ensure that your pieces are treated with the utmost care.
Custom Firing Requests
If you have any special requests for your firing, such as specific temperature adjustments or alternative firing techniques, please reach out to our team in advance. In such cases, renting the whole kiln would be preferable, and we will do our best to accommodate your needs.
