JANUARY 15 -
FEBRUARY 19
Wednesdays | 5:30 pm - 8 pm
$450
Join us for an enriching 6-week hand-building workshop, where you'll deepen your understanding of pottery without a wheel. Led by Alex Meltzer of Meltz Studio, this class is designed for those with some pottery experience who want to refine their skills and start developing their own style. Each Wednesday evening from 5:30-8pm, Alex will guide you through advanced techniques, helping you to create with intention using methods like coil building, slab construction, and pinch pots.
Throughout the workshop, you’ll explore both functional and sculptural pottery projects, working with tools such as the slab roller, extruder, and molds. You’ll build on the fundamentals as you apply these techniques to new, creative projects. While previous hand-building experience is helpful, it is not required.
Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect:
Week 1: Revisit and refine foundational hand-building techniques, focusing on consistency and control.
Week 2: Historical pot inspiration. Study a historical pot, dissect its construction methods, and use it as inspiration for your own work.
Week 3: Contemporary pot inspiration. Explore a contemporary pot, analyze its construction, and create a piece inspired by it.
Week 4: Surface treatment in the greenware stage. Experiment with texture and surface design.
Week 5: Open session for troubleshooting and support on current projects.
Week 6: Glazing and finishing touches. Learn glazing techniques to complete your pieces.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a range of carefully crafted pieces, ready for firing and pickup 2-3 weeks after the session concludes.
